Soma herbs for yoga
What are Soma herbs and how can they be used for yoga?
What are Soma herbs and how can they be used for yoga?
Soma is a Sanskrit word that can be literally translated to mean moon or a drink made out of a particular herb with magical healing properties. Soma can also be considered to be an elixir which helps a yogi to transcend into a blissful state.
Soma itself is an actual herb (much debate exists over the likely botanical plant), the inherent properties of the plant are likely to have caused an elevation of various neurotransmitters and hormones creating a blissful feeling.
Are there herbs which can be used as substitutes for the original Soma?
Herbs which have mood brightening/elevating qualities would all fit this bill. Herbs which reduce anxiety and encourage an increase in certain neurotransmitters such as Serotonin are ideal. So one potential candidate is Griffonia Simplicifonia. If this herb is of interest to you it is important to seek guidance from myself or another suitably qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner.

Are Soma herbs necessary for a bliss inducing yoga practice?
No, is the short answer. Yoga practiced in a certain way can in its own right induce blissful feelings. By inviting the rise of Soma and blissful feelings before you commence your yoga practice can be a great start. Your intention and way of thinking is always important when it comes to Yoga and meditation.
Consider the essence of Soma and develop your practice around that. Soma is aligned to the Moon and has qualities of ripeness, fullness, coolness and true beauty amongst others. So, in your Yoga practice you would be looking to bring these qualities to your Asanas (yoga postures). You may caress the floor as you move, allow your limbs to caress eachother as you twist, let the breath be full and complete without forcing or huffing and puffing. Allow a feeling of happiness, ease and peace unfold. You get the idea.

Is it good to prepare in any way for entering a state of Soma?
I would say Yes. By reducing inflammation in the body, clearing any Ama (metabolic waste) and increasing Agni (metabolic/digestive fire) you are setting up a backdrop where neurotransmitters and hormones will be able to flow more readily. It is important for a yogi to assess what state their physical, mental and emotional bodies are in. By working to bring these into a state of balance where everything is flowing well in the body it is easier and safer to step towards experiencing Soma.
