Turmeric and White Pepper Golden Milk Recipe
Golden milk is a wonderfully soothing and supportive drink that can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and white pepper helps to activate turmeric’s properties as well as promoting good digestion. Together they make milk more digestible and likewise the milk makes the turmeric and white pepper less drying. To learn more about different colours of peppercorn check out my blog post here.
Here I have recommended white pepper as it is slightly less heating than black pepper but if you haven’t got any then you can use black pepper instead and just make the pinch very slight. If you are feeling very dry then you can omit the pepper.
You can use fresh turmeric root as pictured above to make the recipe with, simply peel and grate or you can use dried turmeric powder. Either is fine.
Golden Milk Recipe
Ingredients
150ml almond milk or full fat organic cow’s milk
¼ tsp ground turmeric powder or ½ tsp freshly grated root
Tiny pinch ground white pepper
¼ tsp cinnamon powder
2 cardamom pods gently crushed
Maple syrup, stevia or honey to taste
Method
Place all the spices and almond milk in a saucepan and gently bring to a simmering point.
Simmer for 10 minutes before passing through a fine meshed sieve into a mug.
If you prefer a sweeter drink then feel free to add any of the sweeteners suggested.
The more congestion/heaviness/ signs of excess kapha you have I would suggest opting for honey.
If you have dryness/anxiety/signs of excess Vata or if you have inflammation/redness/signs of excess Pitta then I would suggest maple syrup.
If you are avoiding sugar then Stevia is the best.
Sit back, relax and enjoy.
